Bike Tire Sizes Explained: ETRTO Numbers, 700c vs 29er, Tubeless & Hookless Compatibility | BikeQuiver Cyclopedia

Bicycle tires are sized by two things: how wide they are and the diameter of the rim they fit. The marketing sizes printed large on the sidewall (29 x 2.4, 700 x 40c, 26 x 2.2) are approximate and sometimes ambiguous, but every modern tire also carries a small ETRTO number like 57-622 that identifies it exactly. Find that number and you know precisely which rims the tire fits — the rest is matching the tire's width to your rim and your frame's clearance, and matching tubeless tires to tubeless rims.

Why these standards exist

A tire stays on a wheel because its bead — the stiff hoop of wire or aramid fiber at each edge — seats into a shelf just inside the rim's outer edge. The diameter of that shelf is called the bead seat diameter (BSD), and it is the one measurement that must match exactly: a tire with a 622 mm bead will only ever fit a rim with a 622 mm bead seat. Everything else about tire fit (width, pressure, tread) has some flexibility; BSD has none.

For most of the 20th century, every country sized tires its own way — inches in the US and Britain, 'French' sizes like 700C in continental Europe — and the numbers described the tire's approximate outer diameter, not the rim. The result was chaos: at least three different, incompatible rim diameters were all sold as '26 inch', and a 26 x 1.5 tire does not fit the same rim as a 26 x 1-1/2 tire even though the numbers are mathematically equal. The ETRTO system (European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation, adopted internationally as ISO 5775) fixed this by labeling every tire with its width and bead seat diameter in millimeters — e.g. 57-622. That number is unambiguous, it is molded into every modern tire, and it is the value BikeQuiver uses for compatibility matching.

In the last decade a second wave of standards arrived around tubeless tires — tires that seal against the rim with liquid sealant instead of an inner tube — and around hookless rims, which have straight sidewalls with no bead hook. These bring real benefits (lower pressures, fewer flats, lighter rims) but also hard safety rules: only tubeless-ready tires on tubeless setups, and a strict 72.5 psi (5 bar) ceiling on hookless rims. Knowing which system your tire and rim belong to matters as much as the size.

Modern standards

What you’ll find on bikes from roughly 2018 onward. Tubeless-ready is the norm on 2018+ mountain and gravel bikes and increasingly on road. The ETRTO number works for every era — 26" MTB, UST, and tubular tires are what you'll meet on older bikes.

ETRTO / ISO 5775 sizing

1960s-present (universal)

Also called: ISO sizing, E.T.R.T.O., width-BSD

The international standard that identifies every tire by two millimeter measurements: its inflated width and the bead seat diameter of the rim it fits. 57-622 means a 57 mm wide tire for a 622 mm rim — exactly the same wheel size a 29 x 2.25 marketing label refers to. Rims use the same numbers in reverse (622x25 = 622 mm BSD, 25 mm internal width), so tire and rim can be matched directly. The number is molded into the sidewall of every modern tire, usually in smaller print near the marketing size.

Why it exists: Inch and French sizes described the tire's approximate outer diameter, which drifted as tire widths changed — leaving several incompatible rim diameters all called '26 inch'. ETRTO (the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation, founded 1964) instead standardized on the one measurement that actually determines fit, and ISO adopted it worldwide as ISO 5775.

700c / 29" (BSD 622)

1890s-present; 29er MTB from ~2001

Also called: 700C, 29er, 28" (Northern Europe), 622

Bead seat diameter 622 mm

The dominant wheel size in cycling. Road, gravel, hybrid, and most commuter bikes call it 700c (a French size: '700' was the outer diameter in mm, 'c' a width class); mountain bikers call the identical rim diameter 29" and many European city bikes call it 28". A 29er MTB tire and a 700c road tire fit the same rims — only the width differs.

Why it exists: 700c was the French racing size that won out when road bikes standardized in the late 20th century. The MTB industry adopted the same 622 mm rim around 2001-2010 for its better roll-over, branding it 29" because a wide MTB tire brings the outer diameter to roughly 29 inches.

Typically found on: Nearly all road, gravel, and cyclocross bikes; most modern XC and trail MTBs; hybrids, commuters, and many e-bikes

650b / 27.5" (BSD 584)

1920s France; mainstream 2012-present

Also called: 650B, 27.5, 26 x 1-1/2 (obsolete), 584

Bead seat diameter 584 mm

The second modern wheel size, about 38 mm smaller in diameter than 622. Mountain bikes call it 27.5"; road and gravel bikes call the same rim 650b and typically pair it with a wide 42-48 mm tire so the outer diameter matches a 700c wheel with a narrower tire. As with 622, the two names are the same rim.

Why it exists: 650b was an old French touring and utility size that the MTB industry revived around 2012-2015 as a middle ground between nimble 26" and fast-rolling 29" wheels. Gravel riders later adopted it to fit very wide tires in frames designed around 700c.

Typically found on: Most trail/enduro MTBs 2013-2019 and many current ones (often as the rear of a mixed 'mullet' setup); 650b gravel/all-road wheelsets; small-size road frames

Small-wheel sizes (406, 451, 507)

1960s-present

Also called: 20 inch BMX, 20 x 1-1/8 (451), 24 inch (507)

BSD 406 mm (20" decimal), 451 mm (20" fractional), 507 mm (24" decimal)

The common small-wheel diameters. 406 mm is the standard 20" size on BMX bikes, most folding bikes (including many folding e-bikes), and kids' bikes; 451 mm is a different, larger '20 inch' used on BMX race and some recumbents and folders — the two are not interchangeable. 507 mm is the usual 24" size on kids' MTBs and some fat/utility e-bikes.

Why it exists: Same story as 26": inch labels that described outer diameter split into multiple bead seat diameters. The decimal/fractional trap is at its worst here — always read the ETRTO number on a 20" or 24" tire.

Tubeless-ready (TLR / TLE)

~2006-present (MTB), ~2015-present (road/gravel)

Also called: TLR, TLE (Tubeless Easy), TR, TCS, tubeless-compatible

Standard ETRTO sizes; requires sealed rim bed (tape or solid), tubeless valve, and liquid sealant

The mainstream modern tubeless system. A tubeless-ready tire has a reinforced, precisely-molded bead and an airtight-enough casing to run without an inner tube once liquid sealant is added; the sealant closes the casing's remaining porosity and small punctures as you ride. Brands use their own labels — TLR (Trek/Bontrager, Schwalbe uses TLE, WTB uses TCS, many just say TR — but all follow current ETRTO tubeless tolerances, which is what makes cross-brand tire/rim pairing work.

Why it exists: Riders wanted UST's flat resistance and low-pressure grip without its weight. Making the tire lighter and letting sealant handle air-tightness — while ETRTO tightened bead and rim tolerances — got there, and tubeless-ready is now the default on MTB, gravel, and increasingly road wheels.

Hookless rims (TSS / straight-side)

2016-present

Also called: TSS (Tubeless Straight Side), straight sidewall, crotchless

Rim sidewall with no bead hook; ETRTO max 72.5 psi (5 bar); ETRTO minimum tire widths per rim internal width

A rim standard rather than a tire one, but it dictates which tires you may use. Hookless rims have straight inner sidewalls with no hook to capture the bead, so the system relies on tight ETRTO tolerances and the tubeless bead lock. Rules: tubeless-ready or UST tires only (never a tube-type tire, even with a tube inside), never exceed 72.5 psi / 5 bar, and respect minimum tire widths — ETRTO guidance pairs 25 mm internal hookless rims with 28 mm or wider tires. Most carbon wheel brands (ENVE, Zipp, Giant) publish tested tire-compatibility lists; check them before buying road tires.

Why it exists: Removing the hook lets carbon rims be molded more precisely, stronger, lighter, and cheaper, and suits the wide-tire/low-pressure direction of modern riding. ENVE shipped hookless in 2016; ETRTO published formal hookless standards in 2019.

ECE-R75 e-bike tire approval

2010s-present

Also called: E-25, E-50, e-bike ready

Certification marking on sidewall; no dimensional change — standard ETRTO sizes

A UN/ECE motor-vehicle tire regulation applied to fast e-bikes. Tires certified under ECE-R75 are tested for the higher continuous speeds, loads, and braking forces of motor-assisted bikes and carry an approval mark; Schwalbe and others also print E-25 or E-50 ratings showing suitability for 25 km/h e-bikes or 50 km/h speed pedelecs.

Why it exists: In the EU, 45 km/h speed pedelecs are type-approved as mopeds, so their tires must legally meet the moped tire regulation ECE-R75. For ordinary 25 km/h e-bikes no special tire is required by law, but reinforced e-bike-rated tires are recommended for the extra weight and torque.

26" MTB (BSD 559)

The classic mountain bike wheel size, marked with decimal widths (26 x 1.95, 26 x 2.2). Important: several other, incompatible rim diameters were also sold as '26 inch' — 26 x 1-3/8 fractional tires fit a 590 mm rim, not 559 — so on any older bike, confirm the ETRTO number rather than trusting the '26'.

Why it exists: Derived from American cruiser/beach bike tires, it was the size the first mountain bikes were built around in the late 1970s and stayed the universal MTB standard for three decades until 29" and 27.5" displaced it.

Legacy road & utility sizes (630, 590, 571, 597)

Older sizes you will meet on vintage and hand-me-down bikes. 27" (630 mm) was the standard on US and British road bikes through the 1980s — it is 8 mm larger than 700c and the two do NOT interchange, though many 27" frames can be converted to 700c wheels since the brake reach difference is only 4 mm. 590 mm (26 x 1-3/8) was the classic three-speed and English roadster size. 650c (571 mm) appeared on 1990s triathlon bikes and small road frames.

Why it exists: Each grew out of a national inch-based system before ETRTO unification; they survive because the bikes do.

UST (Universal System Tubeless)

1999-~2015

Also called: Mavic UST

Proprietary square-shouldered bead and hooked rim profile; fully airtight butyl-lined casing

The original mountain-bike tubeless standard, created by Mavic with Michelin and Hutchinson in 1999. UST tires are fully airtight and can hold air with no sealant at all, at the cost of significant weight. The certified UST tire designation has essentially disappeared from the market, replaced by lighter tubeless-ready tires plus sealant, though Mavic still uses the UST name for its road tubeless wheel systems.

Why it exists: The first serious attempt to eliminate pinch flats and allow low MTB pressures; it proved tubeless worked but was too heavy to survive once sealant-based systems matured.

Typically found on: Mavic MTB wheelsets and matching Michelin/Hutchinson tires of the 2000s

Tubular (sew-up)

1890s-present, now niche

Also called: sew-up, tub, boyau

Torus-shaped tire with tube sewn inside; glued or taped to a hookless concave tubular rim

A completely different construction: the casing is sewn closed around an inner tube and the whole tire is glued (or taped) onto a rim with a shallow concave bed and no flanges. Tubulars and clinchers are never interchangeable — each requires its own rim type. Sized either in traditional inch/700c terms or ETRTO style (e.g. 25-622 tubular fits a 622 tubular rim).

Why it exists: The original racing construction: light rims, round supple casing, and the ability to ride a flat tire without it rolling off. Pro road racing, cyclocross, and track held onto tubulars for decades, but tubeless and modern clinchers have displaced them almost everywhere.

Typically found on: Track racing, older race wheelsets, some cyclocross and pro road wheels through the 2010s

How to identify which one you have

By reading the sidewall

Every modern tire has its ETRTO size molded into the sidewall in small print, usually near the big marketing size — look for a pattern like 57-622, 40-622, or 47-584 (it may be prefixed 'ETRTO'). That one number is all BikeQuiver needs. While you're there, note the brand and model name, the max pressure (e.g. 'INFLATE TO 35-65 PSI'), any tubeless marking (TLR, TLE, TR, TCS, UST, 'Tubeless Ready'), and any E-25/E-50 e-bike mark. If the print is worn, rotate the wheel — the size is usually molded on both sides.

By converting the marketing size

If you only have the big printed size, convert it: 700c and 29" both mean BSD 622; 27.5" and 650b both mean 584; 26 with a decimal width (26 x 2.2) means 559; 20" BMX/folding is usually 406; 24" kids is usually 507. Widths in inches convert at 25.4 mm per inch, so 29 x 2.4 = 61-622 and 27.5 x 2.6 = 66-584. Watch the traps: 27 x 1-1/4 (630) is NOT 700c, and a fractional size like 26 x 1-3/8 (590) is NOT the same as decimal 26 x 1.375 (559) — fractional and decimal inch sizes are never interchangeable.

By measuring

To confirm width, inflate the tire and measure across its widest point with calipers or a ruler — expect the real width to differ a few millimeters from the label depending on your rim (wider internal rims make the same tire measure wider, roughly 0.4 mm per extra millimeter of rim width). To confirm wheel diameter with the tire off, measure the rim's bead seat diameter: measure the rim's full outer diameter and subtract about twice the flange height, or measure the tire's inner bead circle — 622, 584, and 559 are far enough apart that a tape measure settles it.

By checking tubeless setup

Not sure if your wheel is set up tubeless? Press the valve: a tubeless valve is a separate part with a lock nut at the rim and often sealant residue; a tube's valve is part of the tube and moves with it. Deflate and pop a small section of bead off — sealant inside means tubeless. On the tire, only sidewall markings like Tubeless Ready, TLR, TLE, TR, TCS, or UST indicate a tubeless-capable tire; if there is no such marking, it is tube-type and must be used with an inner tube on a hooked rim.

Compatibility gotchas

  • Bead seat diameter must match exactly — a 622 tire fits only 622 rims. The good news: 700c road/gravel and 29" MTB are the same 622 rim, and 27.5" and 650b are the same 584 rim, so you can swap between those families as long as width and clearance allow.
  • Fractional and decimal inch sizes are never interchangeable even when mathematically equal: 26 x 1-3/8 (590) does not fit a 26 x 1.375 (559) rim, and 27 x 1-1/4 (630) does not fit 700c (622). Always confirm with the ETRTO number on older bikes.
  • Tire width should suit the rim's internal width. The long-standing rule of thumb is a tire about 1.4 to 2.2 times the internal rim width (Park Tool: 1.5-2x); current ETRTO tables from Schwalbe and Continental pair, for example, a 19-21 mm internal rim with 28-50 mm tires, a 25 mm rim with 37-62 mm tires, and 30 mm MTB rims with 2.25-2.6" tires. Too-narrow a rim makes a wide tire squirmy; too-wide a rim exposes a narrow tire's sidewalls to rim strikes.
  • The same tire measures wider on a wider rim — roughly 0.4 mm per 1 mm of extra internal rim width (Continental's figure). A '40 mm' gravel tire can measure 42+ mm on a modern 25 mm rim, which matters when your frame clearance is tight.
  • Frame and fork clearance is about the mounted tire, not the label: check the actual inflated width and height on YOUR rim, and keep meaningful daylight (roughly 4-6 mm per side) between tire and frame for mud, wheel flex, and manufacturing tolerance. Frame makers publish a max tire size per model — treat it as the ceiling.
  • Tubeless rules: only tires marked tubeless-ready (TLR/TLE/TR/TCS) or UST may be run without a tube, always with sealant on tubeless-ready tires. Never run a plain tube-type clincher tubeless — its bead can blow off the rim.
  • Hookless (straight-side) rims add two hard limits: the tire must be tubeless-ready (even if you install a tube), and pressure must never exceed 72.5 psi / 5 bar — ETRTO further suggests 65 psi for 30-34 mm tires. Respect minimum widths (e.g. 28 mm minimum tire on a 25 mm internal hookless rim) and check the wheel maker's tested-tire compatibility list; this is mainly a road-bike concern, since gravel and MTB pressures sit far below the limit.
  • When tire and rim state different maximum pressures, the LOWER number always governs. And higher pressure is not faster on real roads — modern guidance (Rene Herse and others) puts 28 mm road tires around 55-75 psi, 40-45 mm gravel tires around 25-40 psi, and 2.4" MTB tires around 18-28 psi depending on rider weight.
  • Tubular tires fit only tubular rims and clinchers only clincher rims — the two constructions never mix.
  • E-bikes: heavier bikes and motor torque wear tires faster and stress casings harder — reinforced e-bike-rated tires are recommended for any e-bike, and in the EU tires with ECE-R75 approval (E-50 marking) are legally required on 45 km/h speed pedelecs.
