Bicycle Shifter Standards Explained: Types, Speeds, Cable Pull & Compatibility

Shifters are the controls on your handlebar (or frame, on older bikes) that move the derailleurs and change gears. Getting the right one is about more than click count: the shifter's brand, speed count, cable pull, and mounting style all have to match the rest of your drivetrain. This guide covers every common shifter standard, from vintage downtube levers to wireless electronic shifting.

Why these standards exist

Unlike a seatpost or a tire, a shifter is one half of a matched pair: every click pulls a precise length of cable, and the derailleur converts that cable into a precise sideways movement across the cassette. Each manufacturer chose its own 'cable pull per click' and derailleur leverage ratio, so a shifter usually only indexes correctly with derailleurs designed for the same system. That is why an 11-speed Shimano road shifter will not run an 11-speed Shimano mountain derailleur, even though both say '11-speed' on the box.

Standards also govern how the shifter attaches to the bike. Flat-bar shifters clamp a 22.2 mm bar or bolt directly to the brake lever through integration mounts like SRAM MatchMaker X and Shimano I-Spec. Drop-bar shifters are combined brake-and-shift levers, and on disc-brake bikes they also contain the hydraulic brake master cylinder, which ties the shifter to a specific brake system.

Electronic shifting replaces the cable with wires or radio signals, which removes cable-pull problems but introduces new ones: each brand's electronic parts only talk to each other, batteries and chargers differ, and wired (Shimano Di2, Campagnolo EPS) and wireless (SRAM AXS) systems cannot be mixed across brands.

Modern standards

What you’ll find on bikes from roughly 2018 onward. Modern bikes shift 10-13 speeds, indexed, with electronic (Di2 / AXS) common from mid-range up. Friction, downtube, and early SRAM 1:1 shifters belong to older bikes.

Trigger shifter

1990-present

Also called: Rapidfire Plus, SRAM Trigger, thumb-and-finger shifter

22.2 mm bar clamp or brake-lever integration mount; one lever (usually thumb) shifts to easier gears, a second lever or trigger shifts back

The standard flat-bar shifter on modern mountain, hybrid, and commuter bikes. Two levers under the bar are pushed with the thumb and index finger (Shimano Rapidfire Plus) or thumb only (SRAM). Each press is one indexed click of cable.

Why it exists: Introduced by Shimano around 1990 to let riders shift without moving their hands from the grips, replacing top-mounted thumb shifters.

Typically found on: Nearly all mountain bikes and most flat-bar hybrids/e-bikes since the mid-1990s

Twist / grip shifter

Late 1980s-present

Also called: GripShift, RevoShift, twist-grip

Fits 22.2 mm flat bars; replaces part of the grip, so it needs a shorter grip alongside

A rotating collar built into the grip: twist one way for easier gears, the other way for harder. SRAM built its early business on Grip Shift; Shimano's budget version is RevoShift.

Why it exists: A simple, cheap mechanism with no protruding levers, popular on kids' bikes, entry hybrids, and some cross-country race bikes.

Typically found on: Entry-level hybrids, kids' bikes, older MTBs; SRAM still offers Eagle GripShift for 12-speed

Shimano STI (drop-bar integrated)

1990-present

Also called: Shimano Total Integration, brifter, Dual Control lever

Clamps the 23.8 mm section of a drop bar; brake lever swings sideways for one shift direction, a smaller paddle behind it for the other

Shimano's combined brake-and-shift lever for drop bars. The whole brake lever pushes inward to shift one way and a smaller lever behind it shifts the other way. Hydraulic disc versions (e.g. ST-R7020, ST-R8070) include the brake master cylinder.

Why it exists: Launched on Dura-Ace in 1990 so road riders could shift from the brake hoods instead of reaching to the downtube; it made indexed drop-bar shifting mainstream.

Typically found on: Almost every Shimano-equipped road and gravel bike since the mid-1990s

SRAM DoubleTap

2006-present (largely replaced by wireless AXS from 2019)

Also called: SRAM road mechanical lever

Drop-bar clamp; a single paddle behind the brake lever: a short push shifts to a harder gear, a longer push shifts to an easier gear

SRAM's mechanical drop-bar system uses one shift paddle per lever. Tap it a short distance for one direction, push it further for the other. The brake lever itself never moves sideways, unlike Shimano STI.

Why it exists: SRAM entered the road market in 2006 and needed a design that didn't infringe Shimano and Campagnolo patents; the single-paddle action also works well from the drops.

Typically found on: SRAM Red, Force, Rival, and Apex mechanical road/gravel groupsets, roughly 2006-2023 bikes

Campagnolo Ergopower

1992-present

Also called: Ergo levers

Drop-bar clamp; a paddle behind the brake lever shifts one way and a thumb button on the inside of the hood shifts the other

Campagnolo's integrated drop-bar lever, introduced in 1992. Distinctive thumb button on the inner side of the hood. Many versions can release several gears in one sweep, and the mechanism uses Campagnolo's own cable pull and cassette spacing.

Why it exists: Campagnolo's answer to Shimano STI, keeping the brake lever fixed and adding a thumb lever many riders prefer.

Typically found on: Campagnolo-equipped road bikes (Chorus, Record, Super Record, Centaur, Ekar 13-speed gravel)

Bar-end shifter

1950s-present

Also called: barcon, bar-end lever

Plugs into the open end of a drop bar or TT extension; lever pivots fore-aft

A lever that mounts in the end of the handlebar. Common on touring bikes (reliable, often switchable to friction mode) and time-trial/triathlon extensions. Most Shimano bar-end shifters offer indexed rear shifting with a friction option, and friction front shifting.

Why it exists: Puts shifting near the hands for riders who wanted an alternative to downtube levers, and remains popular for touring because friction mode keeps working even with a bent derailleur hanger or mismatched parts.

Typically found on: Touring bikes, time-trial/triathlon bikes, some randonneur and commuter builds

Shimano road cable pull

1984-present

Also called: Shimano 2:1, road indexing

Rear derailleur moves roughly 1.7 mm per 1 mm of cable (approx. 1.7:1 shift ratio); 10-speed and 11-speed road use slightly different pulls than each other and than MTB

All Shimano road shifters (and Shimano MTB up through 9-speed) use the same basic derailleur leverage, so an old 8-speed road shifter can index an 8-speed MTB derailleur. From 10-speed onward, road and MTB diverged: 10s road, 11s road, and mechanical 12s road each pair only with matching-generation road rear derailleurs.

Why it exists: Shimano's original SIS indexing standard; the 10/11-speed changes accompanied tighter cog spacing and new derailleur geometry.

Typically found on: All mechanical Shimano road groupsets (Claris, Sora, Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace)

Shimano Dyna-Sys (MTB 10/11/12-speed pull)

2010-present

Also called: Dyna-Sys, Dyna-Sys11, Shimano MTB pull

Longer cable pull per click and lower derailleur ratio (approx. 1.2:1) than Shimano road

When Shimano moved mountain groups to 10-speed (2010), it changed the cable pull. Dyna-Sys shifters (Deore, SLX, XT, XTR 10/11/12-speed mechanical) only index with Dyna-Sys rear derailleurs. This is the key reason a Shimano 11-speed ROAD shifter cannot run a Shimano 11-speed MTB derailleur: same click count, different pull per click.

Why it exists: A longer pull makes shifting less sensitive to cable friction and contamination, which matters on mountain bikes with long housing runs and mud exposure.

Typically found on: Shimano mountain groupsets 10-speed and up; also Shimano CUES/Linkglide (2023+) which uses its own shared pull across 9/10/11-speed

SRAM Exact Actuation

2006-present (road mechanical), 2009-2016 (MTB 10-speed)

Also called: Exact Actuation

Approximately 1.3:1 derailleur ratio

SRAM's standard for 10-speed MTB and 10- and 11-speed road. Usefully, they all share the same pull: a SRAM 11-speed road shifter can run a SRAM 10-speed MTB rear derailleur (a popular gravel hack for bigger cassettes).

Why it exists: Created for SRAM's 10-speed generation and carried into its road groups (Red, Force, Rival, Apex) so road and MTB parts of that era interchange.

Typically found on: SRAM mechanical road bikes (10/11-speed) and 10-speed SRAM MTB drivetrains

SRAM X-Actuation

2012-present

Also called: X-Actuation, Eagle mechanical pull

Distinct, longer pull than Exact Actuation (approx. 1.12:1 ratio)

SRAM's standard for 11-speed (X1/GX/X01/XX1) and 12-speed Eagle mechanical mountain drivetrains. 11- and 12-speed X-Actuation parts index only with each other's speed count and are not compatible with SRAM road shifters or Shimano anything.

Why it exists: Introduced with XX1 (2012) to suit the wider 10-42 and later 10-50/10-52 cassettes of 1x drivetrains.

Typically found on: SRAM 1x11 and 1x12 mechanical mountain bikes (NX, GX, X01, XX1 Eagle)

Shimano Di2

2009-present

Also called: Digital Integrated Intelligence, electronic Shimano

Wired E-tube connectors (older: external junction boxes); current road groups are semi-wireless with shifters on coin cells and a central rechargeable battery wired to both derailleurs

Shimano's electronic shifting, launched on Dura-Ace in 2009. Buttons replace mechanical paddles; wires (and on 12-speed road, a wireless shifter link) carry signals to motorized derailleurs. Components must be matched by generation and speed count using Shimano's E-tube compatibility rules.

Why it exists: Electronic shifting eliminates cable stretch and friction, shifts perfectly under load, and enables features like synchronized front/rear shifting.

Typically found on: Higher-end road (105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace Di2), gravel (GRX Di2), MTB (XT/XTR Di2, XTR M9200 wireless), and many e-bikes

SRAM eTap AXS

2015-present

Also called: eTap, AXS, SRAM wireless

Fully wireless (proprietary AIREA radio protocol); identical removable rechargeable battery on each derailleur; shifters use coin cells

SRAM's wireless electronic shifting: Red eTap launched in 2015, and the 12-speed AXS ecosystem followed in 2019. No shift wires at all; parts pair through the AXS app. Road and Eagle MTB AXS parts can be mixed ('mullet' builds pair drop-bar AXS shifters with an Eagle AXS derailleur).

Why it exists: Removing wires makes installation trivial and enables cross-category mixing that mechanical cable pull never allowed.

Typically found on: SRAM Red/Force/Rival/Apex AXS road and gravel bikes, Eagle AXS and Eagle Transmission mountain bikes

Campagnolo EPS & Super Record Wireless

2011-present

Also called: Electronic Power Shift

EPS: wired with internal battery (up to ~1,700 km per charge); Super Record Wireless (2023): fully wireless, rechargeable battery per derailleur

Campagnolo's electronic systems, road-only. EPS (2011) is wired; Super Record Wireless (2023) drops the wires and uses a 12-speed cassette with Campagnolo's own spacing. Neither interoperates with Shimano or SRAM electronics.

Why it exists: Campagnolo's answer to Di2, keeping the Ergopower thumb-button ergonomics in electronic form.

Typically found on: High-end Campagnolo road bikes

Flat-bar clamp & integrated mounts (22.2 mm, MatchMaker X, I-Spec)

2010-present (band clamps: always)

Also called: I-Spec A/B, I-Spec II, I-Spec EV, MatchMaker X, MMX

Standalone shifters clamp 22.2 mm handlebar; MatchMaker X (SRAM) and I-Spec B / I-Spec II / I-Spec EV (Shimano) bolt the shifter to the brake lever clamp instead

Every flat-bar shifter either has its own band clamp for the universal 22.2 mm grip-area bar diameter, or a stubby mount that attaches to the brake lever to save bar space. SRAM has used one standard (MatchMaker X) since about 2010; Shimano has been through several (I-Spec A, B, II, then I-Spec EV from 2019 on XTR M9100/XT M8100/SLX M7100), and the generations do not interchange.

Why it exists: Integrated mounts declutter the bar and let riders fine-tune lever positions, but each brand designed its own interface. Adapters (Wolf Tooth ShiftMount, Problem Solvers MisMatch) bridge SRAM and Shimano mounts.

Typically found on: Mid-to-high-end mountain bikes; budget bikes and mixed-brand builds usually use plain band clamps

Downtube & thumb shifters (friction and indexed)

Downtube levers bolt to brazed-on frame bosses (or a clamp band); thumb shifters clamp a 22.2 mm flat bar and sit on top

The original derailleur controls: a simple lever that pulls cable as you swing it. Pure friction versions have no clicks, so the rider centers the derailleur by feel; they work with nearly any derailleur and any number of gears. Shimano's SIS (1984) added indexed clicks to downtube levers, and most 1980s-90s levers have a switch to fall back to friction.

Why it exists: The simplest way to pull a derailleur cable. Friction shifting predates indexing entirely and survives because it is nearly immune to compatibility problems.

Typically found on: Road bikes before ~1992 (downtube), mountain bikes before ~1990 (thumb shifters), modern touring/randonneur builds

SRAM 1:1 actuation

Mid-1990s-2000s (still on budget 8/9-speed parts)

Also called: SRAM half pipe, 1:1

Approximately 1.1:1 derailleur ratio; roughly twice the cable pull per click of Shimano's road standard

SRAM's original MTB standard for 7-, 8-, and 9-speed shifters and derailleurs (X.4 through X.0 of that era). Not compatible with Shimano derailleurs; SRAM sold separate '2:1' GripShift models for Shimano drivetrains, so check the label on older twist shifters.

Why it exists: SRAM chose a longer pull to make indexing more tolerant of cable friction and to differentiate from Shimano.

How to identify which one you have

By location and shape

Note where the shifter lives. Two paddles under a flat bar near the grip = trigger shifter. A rotating section of the grip itself = twist shifter. Combined with the brake lever on a drop bar = integrated lever (Shimano STI if the whole brake lever swings sideways, SRAM if there is a single paddle behind a fixed brake lever, Campagnolo if there is a thumb button on the inside of the hood). Levers on the frame's downtube or plugged into bar ends identify older or touring-style setups. Buttons with no visible cable = electronic.

By counting & testing

With the bike in the easiest (largest) rear cog, click the right shifter one click at a time toward the hardest gear and count the clicks: clicks + 1 = the shifter's speed count (e.g. 10 clicks = 11-speed). Compare with the number of cogs on the cassette. If the lever moves smoothly with no clicks at all, it is a friction shifter. On the left shifter, count positions to identify a double (2) or triple (3) front setup.

By markings

Look for a model code molded or printed on the shifter body or clamp: Shimano codes start with SL- (flat bar, e.g. SL-M8100 = XT 12-speed) or ST- (integrated brake/shift, e.g. ST-R8020 = Ultegra 11-speed hydraulic). SRAM levers show the group name (GX Eagle, Rival, NX) and often the speed count; 'AXS' or a battery/coin-cell door means wireless electronic. Many shifters also print the speed count on the gear indicator window. Photograph the code and search it to confirm generation and cable pull family.

By the mount

On flat bars, check how the shifter attaches: its own hinged band clamp means a standard 22.2 mm mount; if it bolts directly to the brake lever, it uses an integration mount — SRAM brakes = MatchMaker X, recent Shimano brakes (2019+) = I-Spec EV, 2015-2019 Shimano = I-Spec II. This matters when replacing the shifter or brakes separately.

Compatibility gotchas

  • Speed counts must match end to end: an indexed shifter's click count must equal the cassette's cog count, and the chain and derailleur must be rated for that speed count.
  • Cable pull families do not mix. A shifter only indexes correctly with a rear derailleur from the same family: Shimano road with Shimano road (same generation for 10s+), Shimano Dyna-Sys with Dyna-Sys, SRAM Exact Actuation with Exact Actuation, SRAM X-Actuation with X-Actuation.
  • Shimano 9-speed and older is the friendly era: road and MTB shifters and derailleurs share the same pull and interchange freely. From 10-speed on, Shimano road and MTB (Dyna-Sys) split — an 11-speed road STI lever will NOT index an 11-speed XT derailleur.
  • SRAM's useful exception: 10-speed MTB and 10/11-speed road all use Exact Actuation, so an 11-speed SRAM road shifter can drive a 10-speed SRAM MTB rear derailleur for wide-range gravel gearing. SRAM 11/12-speed MTB (X-Actuation) does not mix with SRAM road mechanical or with Shimano.
  • SRAM and Shimano mechanical parts are never cross-compatible at the rear; aftermarket cable-pull adapter pulleys (e.g. JTek ShiftMate) or friction shifters are the workarounds.
  • Friction shifters (downtube, thumb, bar-end in friction mode) have no clicks to match, so they work with virtually any rear derailleur and cassette — the classic fix for mixed-brand touring builds.
  • Electronic systems are closed ecosystems: Di2 pairs only with Di2 (matching generation/speed), AXS only with AXS, EPS only with EPS. Within SRAM AXS, road shifters can pair with Eagle MTB derailleurs ('mullet' builds); Shimano allows some road/GRX Di2 mixing per its E-tube compatibility charts.
  • Drop-bar hydraulic levers tie you to a brake brand and fluid: Shimano STI hydraulic levers use mineral oil and Shimano calipers; SRAM levers use DOT fluid and SRAM calipers. Replacing 'just the shifter' on a hydraulic drop-bar bike usually means replacing the brake caliper or at least re-bleeding.
  • Shift cable and housing are their own standard: shift housing is 4 mm (sometimes 5 mm) 'compressionless' housing with longitudinal support wires, and shift inner cables are 1.1-1.2 mm with a small cylindrical head. Never use compressionless shift housing for brakes — it can burst under braking loads.
  • Flat-bar integration mounts must match the brake lever: MatchMaker X shifters fit SRAM brakes, I-Spec EV shifters fit current Shimano brakes, and I-Spec generations (A/B/II/EV) do not interchange with each other without adapters such as Wolf Tooth ShiftMount or Problem Solvers MisMatch. A plain 22.2 mm band-clamp shifter fits any flat bar regardless of brakes.
  • Third-party brands state which family they follow: many Microshift levers are 'Shimano compatible' at a given speed count, but Microshift Advent (9s) and Advent X (10s) use their own longer cable pull and only work with their own derailleurs.
  • Campagnolo uses its own cable pull and cassette spacing throughout; 8-speed Campagnolo spacing in particular differs enough from Shimano that cross-brand indexing fails, and modern Campagnolo (11/12/13-speed Ekar) stays within its own ecosystem.
