E-Bike Mid-Drive Motor Systems Explained: Power, Torque & Compatibility
A pedal-assist e-bike's motor (drive unit) is the heart of a closed ecosystem: the frame is molded around one specific system, and the battery, display, and remote must all come from that same system. Nearly every Class 1/3 motor is rated 250 W nominal for legal reasons, so the numbers that actually distinguish motors are peak power (watts) and torque (newton-meters).
Why these standards exist
There is no cross-brand standard for e-bike drive units. Each system has its own motor mount pattern molded into the frame, its own battery interface and communication protocol, and its own display/remote family. That's why a bike built for a Bosch Performance Line CX can never take a Shimano EP801 — and why identifying which system your bike uses matters more than any single number on the spec sheet.
Legal classes shape the numbers. In the US, Class 1 (pedal assist to 20 mph) and Class 3 (pedal assist to 28 mph) both typically carry motors rated 250 W nominal — the same rating EU law requires. Manufacturers compete instead on peak power and torque, which is why a '250 W' DJI Avinox M2S can briefly deliver 1,500 W while a '250 W' TQ HPR50 peaks at 300 W.
Since 2024 the market has split into full-power systems (85-130 Nm, 600-1,500 W peak: Bosch CX, DJI Avinox, Specialized 3.1) and lightweight/SL systems (50-60 Nm, 300-450 W peak: Bosch SX, Specialized SL, TQ, Fazua) — the trade is assist muscle versus bike weight.
Modern standards
What you’ll find on bikes from roughly 2018 onward. Modern here means roughly 2020+ mid-drive systems: Bosch's smart system generation, Shimano EP8/EP801, DJI Avinox, Specialized 2.x/3.x and SL, Yamaha PW-X3, plus the lightweight TQ and Fazua units. Older systems (Bosch Classic/Performance Gen 1-3, Shimano E8000-era, Yamaha PW/PW-SE) mount and connect differently and are effectively their own ecosystems.
Bosch smart system

The OEM market leader, spec'd by hundreds of brands from Trek and Cube to Santa Cruz and Riese & Müller. The smart system generation (2022+) shares batteries (PowerTube/CompactTube), displays, and the eBike Flow app across CX, CX-R, SX, and Cargo Line motors. Bosch has twice raised CX Gen5 torque by firmware — 85 Nm at launch, 100 Nm in 2025, 120 Nm with 2026's Performance Upgrade 2.0.
Why it exists: Bosch built the first mass-market mid-drive ecosystem and keeps OEMs by pairing motor, battery, and service network into one certified package.

Shimano STEPS

The second-widest OEM footprint (Orbea, Merida, Canyon, Cannondale, Norco, YT and many city bikes) with the largest dealer service network alongside Bosch. Batteries are the BT-EN80x family; the EP8 (2020) and EP801 (2022) share mounts, so many frames can take either.
Why it exists: Shimano leveraged its component-group dominance into a drive system OEMs could source alongside drivetrains and brakes.

DJI Avinox

The fastest-growing system in the market: from a single brand (Amflow) at its 2024 launch to roughly 20 brands on the M1 and a reported 60 brands adopting the second generation (M2/M2S, April 2026) — Forbidden, Atherton, Commencal, Mondraker, Whyte, Pivot, YT and more. Named benchmark full-power motor in ebike-mtb's 2026 shootout. Full M2S output requires the high-discharge FP700/RS800 packs.
Why it exists: DJI applied its drone motor and battery engineering to e-bikes, resetting expectations for power density and integration.

Specialized Turbo (Full Power & SL)

A single brand, but one of the highest-volume Class 1/3 lineups in the world (Levo, Kenevo, Vado, Como, Tero, Creo). The full-power 2.2/3.1 motors are built in partnership with Brose (whose e-bike drive business Yamaha acquired in 2025); the lightweight SL 1.2 was co-developed with MAHLE and runs a 48 V system — so Turbo Full Power and SL are two separate ecosystems within one brand.
Why it exists: Specialized wanted control of the whole bike-plus-motor experience and specs its own tuned drive units rather than an off-the-shelf OEM package.

Yamaha PW / Giant SyncDrive

Yamaha invented the pedal-assist e-bike (1993) and today powers Giant, Liv, and Momentum — Giant's SyncDrive Pro2 is a Yamaha PW-X3 tuned to Giant's spec — plus its own OEM business in Europe and Japan. Yamaha ended US complete-bike sales in 2024 but kept the drive-unit business, and completed its acquisition of Brose's e-bike drive division in August 2025.
Why it exists: The original mid-drive maker; persists through Giant (the world's largest bike manufacturer) and deep OEM relationships.
Typically found on: Giant/Liv eMTBs and trekking bikes, various EU brands
Lightweight systems: TQ HPR & Fazua Ride 60

The 'SL-class' alternatives to full-power motors, chosen when brands want e-bikes under ~20 kg. TQ's harmonic pin-ring drive is nearly silent and powers Trek's Fuel EXe and Domane+ plus Scott and BMC; Fazua's Ride 60 appears on Canyon, Pivot, Santa Cruz, and Focus.
Why it exists: A niche the big full-power systems didn't serve: minimal weight and natural ride feel over maximum assist.

How to identify which one you have
By the badge on the motor casing
Look at the drive unit between the cranks — nearly all motors carry the maker's logo (Bosch, Shimano STEPS, DJI Avinox, Specialized, Yamaha, TQ, Fazua) on the casing. Specialized motors are Specialized-badged even though Brose or MAHLE build them.
By the display or app
The head unit gives the system away: Bosch Kiox/Purion + eBike Flow app, Shimano E-Tube, DJI's integrated OLED top-tube display + Avinox app, Specialized MasterMind + Specialized app, Giant RideControl, TQ's minimal top-tube display, Fazua's LED strip.
By the spec sheet of the bike model
Search the bike's make, model, and year — the drive unit and battery are always on the manufacturer's spec sheet. This also tells you the exact motor generation (e.g. EP8 vs EP801, CX Gen4 vs Gen5), which matters for battery and display pairing.
By class sticker (US)
US bikes carry a Class 1/2/3 sticker on the frame. Class 1 = pedal assist to 20 mph, Class 3 = pedal assist to 28 mph. Both use the same 250 W-class mid-drives; the class is a firmware speed limit, not a different motor.
Compatibility gotchas
- Motors are not interchangeable across systems: the frame is molded for one system's mount pattern and battery bay. A motor swap outside the same system family is a new-frame decision, not an upgrade.
- Within a system family, generations sometimes interchange (Shimano EP8 → EP801 share mounts; Bosch Gen4 → Gen5 CX often do with bracket changes) — but battery/display pairing rules still apply, so check the system generation, not just the brand.
- Nominal power (250 W) is a legal constant, not a performance spec. Compare torque (Nm) and peak power (W) instead — and note some peaks are only reachable with specific batteries (DJI M2S needs FP700/RS800 packs for its full 1,500 W).
- Class 1 vs Class 3 on the same motor is firmware: many bikes ship the identical drive unit limited to 20 mph (Class 1) or 28 mph (Class 3). The class matters for trail access and local law, not for parts compatibility.
- Torque figures can change under you: Bosch raised CX Gen5 from 85 to 100 to 120 Nm purely via free over-the-air updates (2024-2026), so two identical motors may perform differently depending on firmware.
